What Necessary Costs: The Story Behind YZ

THE MOMENT THAT SPARKED IT

There is a specific kind of fury that doesn't have a volume.

It doesn't scream. It doesn't break things. It sits with you at the kitchen table at 2 AM and watches the news and reads the names and counts the days between one story and the next and understands, with the specific clarity of something that has been building for a long time, that silence is not an option anymore.

That's where YZ came from.

Not from a writing prompt. Not from a plot outline or a market analysis or a conversation about what kind of book would sell in the current climate. From the fury that doesn't have a volume. From the names I kept reading. From the families I kept watching stand in front of cameras and try to explain -- in real time, while they were still bleeding -- what it felt like to lose someone to a system that was never designed to protect them.

I couldn't find the words in real life.

So I went to the only place I've ever been able to find them.

The page.

YZ is the book I wrote because I needed a family to get justice. Because I needed to sit inside a story where the pursuit meant something. Because writing through grief is sometimes the only way to carry it without it carrying you.

WHAT WRITING IT COST

I want to be honest with you about this because I think we talk about writing the wrong way most of the time. We talk about inspiration and flow and the magic of the creative process and we leave out the part where you are sitting at your desk at midnight writing a scene that requires you to go somewhere you are not sure you are equipped to go.

YZ had those scenes.

Scenes where I had to put the laptop down and walk away. Not because I was stuck -- because I was too present. Because I had gotten so far inside the grief of this family that I needed to come up for air before I could go back down. Because the story was demanding something from me that I had to be careful about giving too fast -- the specific truth of what loss feels like when it comes with no accountability, when the system that was supposed to protect you becomes the thing that destroys you, when justice is a word that keeps moving further away the closer you try to get to it.

I came back every time.

Not because writing it was easy.

Because not writing it was impossible.

That's the only reason I know how to write anything that matters. Not because I want to. Because I have to. Because the story exists and it requires a body to move through and mine is the one that showed up.

The best writers don't write because it's easy. They write because not writing is impossible.

WHO IT'S FOR

On the surface YZ is a crime fiction novel. A family. A police shooting. A pursuit of justice inside a system that wasn't built for them.

But you know by now that the surface is never the whole story.

Underneath YZ is a book about what happens to love when it is put under unbearable pressure. About the specific grief of a loss that arrives with no closure and no accountability and no clean ending -- the kind of grief that doesn't resolve, that doesn't become testimony on schedule, that sits in the body and changes the shape of everything around it.

It's about Black life in America rendered with the full weight of its complexity. Not the version that makes everyone comfortable. Not the version that resolves neatly by the final chapter. The true version.

I wrote it because I needed it to exist.

I needed someone to write exactly this -- this family, this specific grief, this particular pursuit -- and nobody else was writing it. So I wrote it myself.

That has always been my reason.

If the book I need doesn't exist -- I write it.

If the story that needs to be told hasn't been told -- I tell it.

If the truth hasn't been said in exactly this way -- I say it.

YZ is that book.

It's for the person who has watched the news and felt the fury that doesn't have a volume and didn't know what to do with it.

It's for the family member who has lost someone and has been trying to find language for the specific shape of that loss -- the loss that comes with questions that don't get answered and justice that doesn't come and a system that keeps moving forward like nothing happened.

It's for the reader who needs the true version. Not the sanitized version. Not the version that resolves into something easier to swallow.

That person is who I wrote YZ for.

I think that person might be you.
